The need for a second bridge to connect the islands of Mactan and Cebu arises in view of the traffic condition of the existing 2-lane bridge and the urban development activities in Metro Cebu. Several bridge alternatives were considered to span the Mandaue Channel and the extradosed cabled stayed bridge was finally selected. The bridge is an extradosed type with center span of 185.0m and side spans of 112.5m, totalling to about 410m. The deck girder is a 3-cell box girder with a depth of 3.3m at the center and 5.0m at the piers. The detailed design of this bridge including preparation of tender documents, contract drawings, specifications and bidding including construction supervision was handled by KEI.

Additional design requirements were needed to verify the behavior of the bridge under seismic loading considering 0.40g ground acceleration coefficient. KE ASIA was tasked to investigate the dynamic behavior of the bridge using a 3D mathematical model. The dynamic analysis was performed by a multi-model spectral approach using the AASHTO response spectrum.
